So a lot has been going on (HUGE understatement). In short, moved to Seattle, found someone and loving it over here.

I kinda forgot the password to this site and made another one that I've been updating every now and then. Anybody who reads this, please pack up your links and go over to http://mattreplaced.livejournal.com to see how things have been going since the last time I posted on here. Sorry for the inconvenience, but hey the other site has this nifty gray background to it and... yeah. Go over there, add me to your list and I'll do the same.

life in general
Days like today are frustrating. At work I think 'I'm glad I'm moving...' In the evening I'm thinking 'why does everything good have to happen now? Why not a year or two ago?' Of course this has to do with me meeting people that make me wish I weren't moving. There just isn't really any opportunity for me in this town but at the same time brings bigger questions along like what are your priorities really? Does it make any sense to stick around in town for a CHANCE with some people even though the odds are against you rather than follow your dreams and move? Or do differing dreams or goals compete against each-other now, seeing which has priority at the moment? What makes you think you wouldn't meet other people over in Seattle, anyway? What it all boils down to is a certain step towards a career goal competing with a chance towards an eventual personal one. It makes no sense to stay (and I never entertained the thought despite what it may look like here - these are just questions for thought).

Some things we'll never understand, like timing. Why all this fun and possibility now, literally a month away from my move-out date. Is something truely different now, or what is really going on here. What I think is going on is just like when I was in California for a few months last year. Everything was temporary and I had short-timer syndrome the entire time I was there. No pressures, no worrying about the future there. That is where I am now and where I would like to stay. The other piece though, the exposure to different individuals is more complicated and has been a problem essentially the whole time I've been in San Antonio. Maybe it's because I'm out more, that it's 11:30 and I need to get to sleep because I'm up in 6 hours but that really doesn't matter becuse coming in to work tomorrow tired isn't so much a problem. In other words, I'm out doing things I wouldn't have ordinarially done.

That brings me to a bigger point though, and one which I feel I have limited control over which is how to get involved over there. It took a year of not doing much here before I came across the place where I met most of those who I know and will miss so much. The prospects of doing that for another year don't look fun and I'm hoping that it's something that doesn't happen again. But this time around I know more so hopefully things will be different.

Another question though is where has my time in San Antonio gone and what do I have to show for it? The house and car, of course along with much nicer things inside the house than when I came. I'm in exactly the same shape as I was when I got here but other than physical things and email addresses or other contact information for friends what do I really take away from San Antonio? And more importantly, what that will last? That I don't have the answer to and there's always the one in a million shot that there's more to come. I'll try to spare the boring 'talked to the realtor today...' and 'so... more boxes and packing...' stuff.

Small-big Update
My days in SA are now limited, because on July 20* I will be reporting for work over in Seattle. I'm still with the same company so it's more of a transfer. So many things to do... sell the house, take a trip up there to find somewhere temporary to stay, move two cars across the country. It's exciting though, things are going great now. It is funny though, now that I'm leaving there's this sudden interest by a couple of people I know. Maybe it's the extra time I've been spending outdoors, who knows. Anyway, that's the small update with the big news!

*unless I take vacation days or whatever

Six-Monthly update... aka bored in SA
There isn't a lot to report these days. I moved back here from socal last month and work is back to normal. Fun times over there - I met some great people that I hope don't just fade off over time.

Work is... work. That's something I absolutely don't give details about over the internet. I'm finishing up deployment of this supplier quality system at our local site, so things have been a little busy with trying to get all the details right before it goes live in a couple of weeks. Fun stuff. Anyway it's better to be too busy than have nothing to do, unless you like updating your resume and looking for work before long.

I  the ipod that's pretty much always at my side. 40GB is a lot of space and it's always on when I'm in the car or at work. I subscribe to the Adam Carolla show, and Tom Leykis. Pretty much the same stuff I listened to while in socal on 97.1. It's SO much better than the crap on San Antonio radio. Lisle and Hahn?! Please... I actually like when they forget to stop the podcast recording during some of the commercials that come on over the air, for a few minutes it feels like I'm back over there. Minus the nice sea breeze and palm trees outside my window at the desk anyway.

The Porsche is doing well, it handled not being driven (minus a friend of mine starting it up and letting it run for a few minutes once a month) while I was gone. I'm upgrading the stereo somehow this winter... not sure how yet but I'm designing a setup with a new changer and ipod interface. Building stuff is fun.

I was going to transfer grass out from a planter I'm making around the sago palm in the front yard before it freezes, but since the first big freeze of the season is tonight I just don't see that happening. I can still lay the edge and border, but no planting or getting it ready. Really, it's too bad. If it's not hot outside the plants are dormant and I can't work outside. By the time they're back up again it'll be hot out. No problem, I doubt I'll always live in Texas.

I got good news about the tire today - it wasn't damaged yesterday so the bill for repair (a new valve stem) came out to a whopping $2.00. Also topped off the a/c today and the air came out about 50 degrees when I took the car out this evening. The Porsche is good to go again.

I should explain this one - while coming home from something yesterday evening I noticed the back end of the car was acting funny. Luckily I was on the street next to the one I live on and the tire wasn't all the way flat yet.

Can't say there's a lot going on these days. Just waiting on UTSA to get back to me on the whole admissions thing, work and catching up on things I've neglected a while at home. There's a wedding this weekend over in Houston I'm going to. I haven't been over there since passing through on my way to Orlando two and a half years ago. By my count that leaves 3 people I've kept up with from college that are still single. I'm definitely going to these things less often these days.

Anyway, nothing much going on here.

still alive
I spent most of today working on installing the new clutch in the Porsche. It all worked out allright. No broken bolts, stripped heads, or anything nasty like that. The bolts holding the transaxle to the torque tube felt about like they were tightened by King Kong but that's nothing a bigger bar couldn't fix. It all was going according to plan until I got to the part where you lower the transaxle from the car, and that's when physics and murphy's law decided to tag team against me.

Apparently the transaxle weighs more than I do or it's a lot harder than I thought to center a jack underneath it. Either way, it's still in there but with one bolt and a jack below it keeping everything in until I can call in some help tomorrow.

Can't help but wonder who actually reads this thing, as rarely as it gets updated. It's still alive though and I'll probably get back to updating it more often sooner or later anyway.

I'm tired from doing battle with the car, and I'm still not quite better yet so time for sleep before the party this evening.

Nearly a month already?
Well what's going on these days... guess it's best to pick up where I left off. In order of what I posted:

- The a/c in the Porsche blows really cold now but I think it's capable of a little more. 100 degree days can't be that far off.
- Work is fine now.
- Family came and went.

- Sarah: She is very busy these days. We've talked on the phone but she has been busy to the point that it's been about 4 weeks since I've seen her. Not like either of us is mad or there's anything more to read into this; she's honestly that busy. Sometimes things are what they are.

What else did I write about... her other dogs didn't get sick since we bleached the heck out of everything before life overtook her (thanks for the help, Meg! :) ) Aaaand the truck is now safety inspected. The whole fleet is 100% legal now.

Now the present:
Not a lot going on now. I'm trying to get into grad school - I had planned on getting in starting this summer but now there isn't enough time left to take the stupid test (my fault for thinking I was going to take it next weekend... AKA the day before Easter!). I see it as yet another standardized test. Whoopee. It would be nice if they'd take my GRE scores or the fact that I've already gone to grad school, but whatever. I'll play the game. The school is UTSA, by the way. MBA program. Anyway I can tell that negotiating prerequisites I've already taken equivilants for back at A&M will be fun, but I'm armed with syllabuses and course descriptions from classes I took and I'm not worried.

The whole school thing is kind of funny. There's someone I met who is in the program I'm going into who I'm at the point that I'd like to get to know better but I'm pretty sure she just started dating a friend of mine. What do they say... a day late and a dollar short? Whatever. It's just my luck though. Guess I'll find out in a couple of days when I *hopefully* meet up with her to pick up the book.

This town is frustrating. There really aren't a whole lot of people that I actually get interested in, but if I wind up going to school I'm here until about the end of 07.

what have i been up to
I've been busy since I was last here. Here's what's been going on:

- Got the Porsche back, played around with the power steering, and am now messing with the A/C. Preventative maintenance type stuff but also an upgrade. The A/C should blow much colder once I'm done.
- been pulling OT at work for the last week, but things are somewhat caught up now so I doubt there will be any this week
- Family coming over this thursday, I plan on taking the day off if possible

- Sarah (this'll take more than a line item)
In a nutshell, it's nearly certain that there won't be anything between us but for us to become lifelong friends would not surprise me. We still do all kinds of stuff together, it's one of those rare guy-girl interactions where neither party is interested in the other party but they go do all kinds of stuff anyway. Hard to describe. A side effect of being around her is that strangely enough, I've got confidence like I've never had before. Now all I need is to be around someone who's able to capture and hold my attention. I'm still extremely choosey in who I would consider starting something up with. It'll probably happen sooner or later though. I'm still sticking to the 'no teachers' rule though. Would really like to find someone who's the professional sort, kind of like I am. But anyway...

This afternoon she called me up - she awoke to find that this stray dog she'd picked up 4 days ago was sick in her house while she was asleep. I mean BAD sick. I took the truck over (easier to clean up b/c of the vinyl seats and rubber floor should it get sick again) and before long we took off for the vet (side note: PUT THE NEW REGISTRATION STICKER ON AND GET SAFETY INSPECTED ALREADY!). To make a long story short, the dog most likely had parvo and dystemper. I say had because it was in the better interests of her and the dog for it to be put down. I felt absolutely horrible for her though, since even though she'd only had the animal a few days it was obvious she really liked it. She was clearly shaken up by the whole experience and there was nothing I could do to help. All I can do is say a prayer for her.

Anyway that's pretty much everything since the last update. Maybe they'll become more common again, who knows. Kind of depends on the amount of time I have and what's going on that's noteworthy. So far as I can tell I have, at most, two readers of this. If anyone else stumbles by this feel free to drop me a line. I'm curious if there's anyone out there.

10:29 pm
I totally forgot to write the other part in here. Anyway, this weekend was a whole lot of fun. On Saturday I tried meeting up with someone from high school who was back in town, but the place was full by the time we got there. Sarah came along to San Marcos and we went over to the square. It actually turned out to be a great evening. We got back to San Antonio a little late but it was worth it. I remember we went to Nephews, Hungry Stick (just a note: where'd top cats go?!), two places I forget the name of, and the place next to the Green Parrot. Finally to the diner that used to be Diversions before going back to SA. I can't believe that everywhere in San Marcos shuts down at 1 - I thought closing time was normally 2 am everywhere.
10:21 pm
Planned vs. Actual
I planned on having the car taken care of already. Is the car back to normal? I don't think so!

Friday - fixed the door stuff and just need to close it up. No big deal.
Saturday - decided that it'd be a good idea to fix the small power steering leak. No big deal, I have a gasket kit that I bought before the person ran into me in November. I follow the instructions online and get to the last step without any problems, so of course the last step is where the fun begins. Long story short, I learn how to use a tie rod end puller the right way after first trying the wrong way (replacement comes in sometime this week... thank you, Paragon!).

Anyway the rack itself shouldn't be bad to work with, and by next weekend it should all be straightened out. I wanted the car ready by Tuesday, but I underestimated how much trouble it'd be to solve this one leak. Live and learn.

Woo, got the white car back. Now all that's left is to repair the wiring damage caused by the other body shop last year and it'll all be good again!

That's all for this update!

12:54 am
Today was supposed to be the start of a 3 day weekend but I wound up having to go to work anyway. I got a lot done, but I already know that I'll be in early on Monday. Depending on how things go, this could be the start of 12 hour days for a while. There is too much going on right now, but I guess that's better than there being nothing at all to do.

So I wound up going out again last night with Sarah. During the course of normal conversation she wound up saying something about not being ready for anybody right now. I could tell that it wasn't an out or anything, just the truth. We'll still probably wind up hanging out and stuff but I can't help but not be disappointed. It's frustrating - I finally meet someone interesting and they're caught up in some phase where they're finding themself. Of course there's still a chance, as she said something about how she was friends for a long time with some people in her past that eventually moved on to more. But the chance is more or less impossibly small and to me equates with 0.

Of course today wasn't a very good day... that's how I woke up and it just stuck around. The weather is almost a perfect match, it's in the 30s and raining.

I was supposed to have the car back by now but they're still having problems finding parts. Guess that's what happens when you're looking for a part that's specific to a model that just over 9,000 were brought to the US. The car will be back someday. I think it's been about a month now. If nothing else that gives me time to change the serpentine belt in the Toyota tomorrow. It's times like this that make me wish I had a bigger heater for the garage.

Today was not a bad day. Work was ok and before I knew it, it was time to go home.

I had to walk between the far ends of our site today (about 3/4 mile one way) and that gave me a lot of time to think about things. Most of it really wouldn't make much sense on here so I'll just leave it unsaid. A lot that is going on now makes more sense and I'm really glad that I decided to walk instead of finding a cart.

Not a lot going on right now since the group I meet up with on mondays was cancelled this evening. That's pretty much it for today. Quiet, but good.

11:37 pm
busy week...
To do list:
DONE: carpet guys fixing the living room

Coming up:
- mom visiting tuesday / wednesday... still not sure if she's staying wednesday night
- car getting out of the shop... someday? they can take all the time they want if they'll get the job done right
- bunch o' stuff at work
- CLEAN UP MY ROOM AND CARPET DEBRIS BEFORE MOM GETS HERE TOMORROW AFTERNOON!

I probably could've cleaned up the carpet bits if I didn't come up here and type.
6:40 pm
Not a lot went on over the weekend... got a lot done around the house at least.

Sarah and I are going to the rodeo this saturday (also known as my birthday). I'm actually getting ready to get tickets. We can probably make it there sometime in the evening. I still need to get tickets, I'll have to call and see if she's heard of whoever is playing. I'd rather get in, see the events but I'm not too big on country music. Don't know if they sell tickets to do that or if it includes seeing whoever's playing that night but I'll find out soon.

Anyway things seem to be going well between us, and except for the fact that I was out late last night because of the super bowl everything is pretty good.

6:49 pm
hooray friday
Ein neuer Eintrag, what to say...

The both of us had a good time last night, we stayed out until past 11. Nothing too serious, just hanging around starbucks / b&n and talking about stuff. She's fun to be with and we don't have any problems coming up with stuff to talk about.

Tonight I'm going over to Fouad's place and it's kind of a low key evening. Sarah said she'd call later - got stuff going on with her mom for a while this evening.

It's already been a decent start to the weekend - the replacement CD came in that I've been waiting for and I gave away a whole bunch of stuff, and filed the trash can with things to get rid of. I can probably fill 3 more large paper boxes with stuff to give away later. I'm pretty much running out of things that need to go. It's taken a while but at the same time I went for about 7 years where I didn't really have a permenant place to live and things just stayed the way they were (or were boxed up) over at my parent's place. Then when I came here everything just moved with me...

Anyway the car isn't out of the shop yet but the rental had to be back today. Now I'm driving the Toyota again - not that there's anything wrong with driving my own other car but it was nice to put the miles on something else for a week.

I brushed the dog today - it looks like something shredded a stuffed animal out in the back yard from all his fur. He is supposed to drop his undercoat sometime in the spring or late winter and it seems like that time is near...

Anyway that's everything. See whoever reads this thing later!

Good day today. Two evenings in a row I've managed to talk until a fully charged cell battery is empty, if that implies anything. Tomorrow should be a fun day!

Plans are set up for thursday now... things are going well (see comments on yesterday's entry). Should be an interesting update coming up soon anyway.

absence makes the heart grow fonder...
Overall it's been an ok last couple of days.

The good news:
Got somebody's number and she sounded interested in meeting up later this week. Now I've just got to figure something out... I'd like to get something going with a bunch of people from church like movies, bowling or whatever. That seems like a safe enough start. I hope to have some sort of plans figured out by this time tomorrow.

Got a replacement CD ordered. One of the CDs I bought in Munich is a 2 disc set. Disc 1 is common and also sold as a standalone album, disc 2 was a limited edition and has been out of print for at least a year and a half. Disc 1 was damaged somehow in a portable CD player and I found a replacement online. All I can say is thank God the second disc wasn't hurt! It's stored away safe now - I made copies of all my import CDs to use.

The Porsche is in the shop now and should be back by the end of the week. Since the accident wasn't my fault I'm in a rental.

The bad news:
I now understand why GM is out of money. The car I'm in (a newish Cobalt) is a huge change. Spongy brakes, poor acceleration, and acres of plastic... At 7,500 miles I can already hear 2 or 3 distinct rattles coming from somewhere. I don't know how to describe it, but it's a really bland model. Even more than the Corolla an ex had, but that thing was always trashed out (huge understatement).

Also, the dog decided to eat some of the carpet in the living room when I turned my back to him yesterday. By eat I mean unravel... not eat. Apparently berber carpet comes apart like a sweater. About a 6x6 inch square needs to be replaced where the carpet borders with the entry (wood floor there) bit it's still another thing I don't have time to call somebody in for. I don't know how he did it, it must've only taken minute but at least I caught him pretty quickly.
